About Power of Me for Girls

Do you find yourself wondering, ‘Where did my little girl go?’

Have you noticed any of the following with your daughter?

  • Roller-coaster of emotions: One minute she’s on cloud nine, the next she’s totally upset, and you’re wondering ‘What happened?’.
  • Low self – confidence: She feels like she isn’t as popular as her friends, good enough to get the job done, capable of excelling in certain areas of her life?
  • Changes in mood: She was happy and care-free, but now seems like the weight of the world is on her shoulders, and is less confident in her ability to navigate her reality. She seems to anger easily.
  • Ungrateful: nothing seems to be enough.
  • Friendships and bullying: she and her friends are having more difficulties in their relationships. There’s more drama.

If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of these, know that it’s a natural part of growing up for girls. But it can be a difficult time for them (and us!) to manage. As parents, we want our daughters to be in control of their emotions. We want them to have healthy relationships with others — including us!

While this time will definitely have ups and downs, know that you can provide your daughter with on-going support, tools, and perspective to help her do the following:

  • Understand that her feelings are not wrong. They’re normal.
  • Experience a safe space to talk about her feelings, free of judgment, with a guide who cares deeply about her.
  • Connect with a community of girls who are experiencing the same emotions, and can relate to her.
  • Experience education, fitness and mindfulness with other girls who are her age.

We are thrilled to continue offering Power of Me memberships for girls in grades 4-8! Additionally, we are offering a second location and time for workshops in Minneapolis! This series of workshops and retreats will provide young girls with on-going support to empower their beautiful selves and find their inner spirit and self-esteem.

Example Workshop Topics:

Nutrition

This workshop is mostly about mindful eating.  We will practice mindful eating and talk about how participants can bring that into their lives.  We will also discuss how to be a healthy eater by using the MyPlate program.

Body Image and Self Worth

In this workshop we will think about what kind of person you are as well as discussing the difference between body image and self-image. Participants will brainstorm what they can do to improve their body image and come up with “I am” statements for themselves.

Bullying/Peer Pressure

In this workshop, we will discuss bullying and what that might look like in their lives. Peer pressure happens at all ages and it is important that kids learn how to recognize if they are being pressured to do something they are not comfortable doing. There will be discussion and practice about how to stop harassment and finally closing with a bit about cyber safety.

Celebration

Everything we do needs to be celebrated.  This will be a great celebration day to support and acknowledge each other on a job well done throughout the year.  The focus of our celebration is around the community we have built throughout the 9 months together.

Community Service

This workshop continues building on the three rules introduced in our Self-Defense workshop with I Am Initiative. The third rule is: Be Positive Change.  Conduct yourself with responsibility, authority and act powerfully according to what you believe and you will have a positive and powerful impact in the world.

Dance

This workshop will cover the basics of dancing with empowering messages on building strength and confidence.

Feelings

We know that a our moods changes from moment to moment while going through puberty. This is normal, but some feelings – like strong sadness, anger, loneliness, and fear – can keep a us from enjoying life. We will talk about this roller coaster of emotions that they are experiencing.  Participants will also explore conflicting feelings and learn how to identify and evaluate the different feelings and learn to make healthy choices.

Fitness

Participants will have the opportunity to explore different fitness options for them.  We know that not everyone is interested in running, biking, swimming, kickboxing, etc.  But we do know that EVERYONE needs to move their body.  If your daughter is over the age of 10, she should be exercising at least 60 minutes a day.

We’ll explore the benefits of physical activity – surrounding all areas of wellness (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social).  There will be some talk about the elements of physical fitness and different types of exercise (aerobic and anaerobic).  We will even measure our own balance, flexibility, and strength by participating in a health lab!

Friendship/Healthy Relationships

Friendships can be difficult in middle school.  By this time in the year, many kids will have begun to understand some of these struggles.  In this workshop, we talk about healthy and unhealthy relationships, power and control with teens, and respect in relationships.

This workshop will be guided by the girls and facilitated by the instructor.

Kickboxing

For this workshop, Lisa Van Ahn from the I Am Initiative joins us. She teaches participants how to protect themselves, trust who they are & what they feel so they can be positive change in the world. The guiding message is self-defense through self-love.

Puberty

This workshop includes talk around all the changes in our body and what we can do with those changes – periods, skin/acne, hair, body odor, etc.  This is a time for the kids to get their questions answered while hanging out with their peers.

Self-Defense & Personal Safety

For this workshop, Lisa Van Ahn from the I Am Initiative joins us. She teaches participants how to protect themselves, trust who they are & what they feel so they can be positive change in the world. The guiding message is self-defense through self-love.

Stress Management

This workshop takes place in February. Knowing that March is the start of testing for most schools, February is the perfect time to work on managing our stress.  Participants will learn about stress and how it affects the body, stressors, and positive/negative ways to deal with stress.

We will look at the brain and what the brain and body do in stressful situations.  Finally, we come up with and experiencing different strategies for managing stress.

Goal Setting

Join us as we get to know each other and set goals for the school year. When we set goals and remind ourselves each month of the goals we set for ourselves, we have a better chance of achieving them. We will set goals in the areas of physical health, social health, emotional health, and school.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if the Power of Me is right for my child?

The Power of Me was developed to be valuable to all participants in grades 4-8, regardless of ability level. Katie Thune, M.A. Ed, the founder of Mad Hatter Yoga & Wellness, who developed the Power of Me series, has worked for over 10 years as a school teacher. In this time she has also done extensive Special Ed work. Anna Hayek, BA Ed., teacher for the Power of Me, has worked as an EL teacher for over 10 years. She has done extensive work with English Language Learners during her years as a school teacher. In short, the Power of Me is perfect for everyone.

How does payment for Power of Me memberships work?

When you sign up for the Power of Me memberships, you will be asked to provide credit/debit card information. Upon signing up for the Power of Me Membership, you will submit the first month’s payment. Subsequent payments will occur October  – May.

What happens if I join after September 1st?

The monthly fee is the same, and you will still have access to all that is offered in your membership tier, minus any workshops that have already occurred.

Do you offer scholarships for the Power of Me?

A very limited number of scholarships will be offered to girls who are in need. If you believe you may qualify, please email us.

Can I cancel my Power of Me membership?

Power of Me memberships are offered over the course of a school year.  When you begin a Power of Me membership you receive a ton of value and support from day 1. Because so much planning goes into each membership, early cancellation will result in a $250 cancellation fee.

Do you offer refunds?

The Power of Me has been implemented with students from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels, and we’ve seen it consistently have a substantial impact on kids’ lives. We do not offer refunds. In the event that you should need to cancel your membership early, you will be able to for a fee.

Can my daughter make up a missed workshop?

YES! We are offering workshops at 2 locations this year on 2 different days.  If your child misses a workshop, they could make it up at the other location that same month.
